Between Gray Summit and St. Clair Missouri sits the Indian Harvest “Indian Trading Post”. While researching our trip on Route 66 we ran across mention of this gift shop/trading post a couple of times. One wonders why it was not mentioned with a warning.
This is our second year traveling the route and we have never been treated more poorly than we were at this location. While traveling with 3 cars consisting of my mother-in-law, father-in-law, my mother and father, my husband and myself we decided to stop and buy some Route 66 memorabilia. We all piled out of our separate vehicles and made our way towards the two teepees located on the property next to the parking area. We were not even able to go a few steps before being rudely stopped by a woman who was very nasty in telling us we were not allowed to take pictures and we would not be allowed to enter the gift shop without first paying a $2.00 fee just to enter. Now, in my opinion, the fact that this fee is charged at all is ridiculous yet we might have been willing to pay it if the information had been imparted with the smallest bit of courtesy. However, the woman was so rude everyone in the group was offended and we decided to spend our money elsewhere. Nowhere on the property or on any signage leading up to the property was there anything posted about a fee for entering or a warning to not take pictures. That should have been the end of it as we were already walking back (just a few steps) to our cars to leave, however, it was not the end. The woman started shouting and a man came out of one of the teepees and stomped angrily towards us. Then both the man and woman started shouting at us that we needed to get off their property while physically charging at us. My husband had opened the trunk for me when we first arrived so I might get an umbrella since it was beginning to rain quite heavily. He opened the trunk so that I might put the umbrella back in and these nasty people shouted that we were stinking up their parking area and we needed to leave immediately. At this time my mother-in-law, father and mother were already back in their vehicles and my father-in-law had his door open ready to get in. (Just for reference, this all happened in less than five minutes.) These people shouted at us that we were users and other rude profanity because we didn’t want to pay their fee. That wasn’t the issue. The issue was how rudely we were told about this fee. As we were pulling out of the parking lot the man charged each of our cars and took pictures of the vehicles we were driving as well as our license plates! What? We can’t take pictures but they can? I think they owe us $6.00; $2.00 for each vehicle. Talk about giving the route a bad name. It is my suggestion that if you don’t want bad tempered proprietors shouting at you, charging you and your vehicle physically, and being threatened you should avoid this stop like the plague! Sincerely, The Phillips and Baker Family’s Fort Worth, Texas __________________ Happy Travels!

Reply with quote | #3 | I just HAPPENED across this blog and was so totally in shock as this EXACT same experience happened this time LAST year in 07 to my daughters and their friends.....the oldest actually called me crying as she was afraid that one of them was going to pull a gun out on them...it started with the same woman ranting and screaming that these "d*mn kids wanting to use her place as a bathroom and then informed them of the 2.00 charge for admission and one guy said that it wasn't posted and she got soooooooooooo out of hand that the group decided to leave and avoid anymore crazy ness from this woman...then the woman chased them out saying they couldn't leave that she had called 911 and the police were on their way...a man came out too and they were taking pictures with their phones of the license plates...one was trying to avoid hitting them with the vehicle and skimmed the cheap white barn type paint on the old metal fence and she actually had the police write up a report then called the insurance company and said she would take a flat 50.00 to save the insurance from sending a man out to look at the damage...their insurance paid it with no questions that really made us mad...it is so obvious that they have done this numerous times to scam people out of money. This is sooooo weird that it is so identical to their stories.BBB should close them down. __________________ tmama |

Reply with quote | #4 | a friend and I just finished a route 66 trip and this was one of our 1st stops after leaving St. Louis. We were greeted with profanity. I wish i was exaggerating, but sadly i am not. I was amazed and said something about "wow, that's not the spirit of the mother road"...and she (i assume the owner) told me she didn't want any "route 66 trash" at her place. okay then why would you buy a business on the route?
I wish she would close up shop so other people don't have the same experience...I am glad we didn't have any kids around to hear the words she used. __________________ ~~andie |

Reply with quote | #5 | Andie - Thanks for the post. Yes, this place is a terrible reflection on the Mother Road. But, whether it was on Route 66 or not, it should be OUT OF BUSINESS!! It simply makes no sense for a business owner to treat their customers in this way. These folks obviously have no concept of how to run a business and Route 66'ers -- take note.
If they say they don't want any "Route 66 Trash," then start a boycott. Don't stop and they should get their wish -- out of business soon. __________________ Happy Travels!

Reply with quote | #6 | We live in the St Louis area and have property in St. Clair.
My friends and I had a similar situation there. I truly believe this place is a cover for some sort of drug activity.
You and I will be glad to know that there is a For Sale sign on the property now. |

Reply with quote | #7 | I last visited Indian Harvest maybe 6 or 7 years ago, and experienced none of the more recent visitors "horrors". The propietor was friendly and helpful. I have tried to revisit the place recently only to find it closed at the time. Since I live about 15 miles away, perhaps I'll try to pay another visit.
I image his business has been slow, and I think it's for sale. And NO WONDER!! given the treatment of his/her guests!!!
I doubt, but who knows, there's much drug activity, given that this place sits next to a stretch of I-44 with a history of large drug busts and other SHP activities.
Also!! In NO WAY am I trying to protect or excuse this establishments behavior!! I've just not been treated poorly. But things change, and it sounds like they've changed for the worse.
I'm going to have to check it out for myself.... |

Reply with quote | #8 | I just went down Rt. 66 today and my husband and I stopped at this place for a picture. The lady comes running out of somewhere, yelling that we can't take a picture without either paying a $2 per person fee, or going to the gift shop. She was nice but weird. A man showed up, and kept trying to get us to purchase some buffalo jerky or summer sausage. He reaked of pot, and I wasn't really thrilled about his attitude. We purchased some buffalo jerky, and left. I didn't get the horrible treatment, but I didn't feel 100% welcome either. I do know that my next trip will avoid this shop. |

Reply with quote | #10 | We made the mistake of stopping here in August. We were met by a screaming woman, a charging man and an attack dog. My wife was about fifty feet from me and I actually feared for her life. On the plus side we stopped further down the road at the home of the world's largest rocking chair, these people werre great! |
